August 2026

August 2026 Notes to SW Members

Potluck No-Waste Picnic: For everyone who missed the picnic, we missed you! And, we can’t say that much about what happened, because – as we all know – what happens at the picnic stays at the picnic! Except to say, it was a perfect summer evening out at Wickham Lake.

Guest Speaker: Tim Dalton and Beverly Braxton spoke about a new initiative hosted by our friends at We the People Warwick. Very simple concept that we were eager to hear about. Could you use some help with projects around your home, ride sharing, etc.? Are you looking for ways to help others? Check out the new Warwick Time Exchange to learn more. It’s a very clever way for the community to give of their time and receive assistance in return.

Food Scraps to Compost: Due to sudden changes to our operation, the committee needs to temporarily pause the program. We hope to be back soon, but need to work out a few logistical issues first. Look for program updates on our website and/or our Facebook and Instagram accounts!

In the meantime, thank you to our many volunteers and contributors, the Warwick Valley Farmers’ Market, The Warwick Valley Chamber of Commerce, Village of Warwick DPW, Dan Doyle and our friends at Fence Road Farm Brewery.

We’ve been working with these wonderful supporters for four years and in the last three years alone we have collected well over 25 tons of food scraps! Keeping that out of the landfill has prevented more than 2,000 pounds of methane from being released into the atmosphere. That’s the equivalent to the emissions produced by consuming more than 8,000 gallons of gasoline. Wow! Thank you one and all! garden@sustainablewarwick.org.

Pollinator Pathway:  Our Pollinator Pathway Committee will meet in Mountain Lake Park on Tuesday, September 8th, at 9 AM to tend our pollinator gardens and hack back invasive plants.Pollinators@sustainablewarwick.org.

Book Club: Our book club will also meet via Zoom on September 8th at 3:00 PM, this time to discuss Crossings, by Ben Goldfarb; a non-fiction book about road ecology – the environmental impacts of roads and how to reduce them. This is a well written book and is sure to inspire a lively discussion. All are welcome to join us, even if you haven’t read the book!

Hiking Club: On Saturday, September 12th, the Hiking Club will be guided on the Hidden Hollow Trail in Mountain Lake Park by Sam Walters, Town of Warwick Recreation Director. Check out all the details about this hike, upcoming hikes, and other hiking opportunities on the new web page devoted to our hiking club. To join the hike reach out to events@sustainablewarwick.org.

Upcoming Events

Hands Across the Hudson will take place on August 30th, from 1-3:00 PM, at the Walkway Over the Hudson (between Highland and Poughkeepsie, NY). This event is sponsored by a coalition of Indivisible groups in the Hudson Valley celebrating America's 250th birthday. Registration is recommended. Carpooling is strongly encouraged.  For more information, visit: their Facebook page or jessica50f.substack.com/p/hands-across-the-hudson.

Clean Energy Expo: On Sunday, September 13th, Sustainable Hudson Valley will hold a Clean Energy Expo in Red Hook, NY, as part of its Climate Solutions Week. Then on October 2, 2026, SHV will hold this year’s Climate Solutions Summit in Newburgh. We are planning carpools to both events. Check in with the Climate and Energy Committee if you would like to sign up or learn more. CleanEnergy@sustainablewarwick.org

In the last year, if you did something that gave you satisfaction for contributing to some aspect of sustainability, please drop us a line and let us know about it. In times like these, we need to savor success. steeringcommittee@sustainablewarwick.org

The SW monthly meeting in September will be held on Wednesday the 16th via Zoom at 7:00 PM. We hope you will keep in touch and join us at the meeting.
